Pumpkin faces

Sweet treats at Halloween don't have to be bad for you. The trick is to find nutritious natural ingredients and cast a little magic.

Ingredients

  • 1 pumpkin - around 6kg / 13lb
  • 60g / 2 oz. of Demerara sugar
  • 60g / 2 oz. of butter, cut into little pieces
  • 1 tablespoon of orange juice
  • 1 level teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 4 liquorice "bootlaces"

Method

  1. Cut the pumpkin in half, peel and de-seed it
  2. Use a sharp knife to cut circular pieces from the pumpkins for ‘faces’. Aim to get about 8 faces from the pumpkin
  3. Carefully make holes for the eyes, nose and mouth, using the knife and an apple corer - children should ask an adult for help to do this
  4. Lay the ‘faces’ in greased shallow roasting tins and sprinkle with the sugar, butter, orange juice and cinnamon
  5. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C / 350°F / Gas Mark 4 for 30 minutes, basting halfway through cooking
  6. Carefully transfer each pumpkin ‘face’ to a plate and allow to cool
  7. Arrange a few pieces of liquorice ‘bootlace’ around the top to resemble hair

What you will need

  • Baking tray
  • Chopping board
  • Chopping knife
